Social media undergoes a spot of nip/tuck

The impact of social media was high on the agenda at a recent meeting with the surgeons at the McIndoe Surgical Centre. Pegasus had been invited by the prestigious centre to meet the surgeons and explain how the team here supports their marketing department.
Over a delicious dinner, created by the centre’s Michelin star chef – only the best for our patients – the evening’s main event was a fascinating talk from leading health journalist, Jane Symons and an interactive workshop looking at examples of PR in the press. Then it was time for Pegasus to do their own PR by giving an overview of the current McIndoe communications programme and explaining to the surgeons how they can showcase their exceptional work in the media.
The evening closed with a talk about the role of digital communications in the world of cosmetic surgery – from the impact of peer to peer referral on the decision making process, through to an individual surgeon’s reputation management.
The event was such a success that McIndoe now plans to a hold similar event every 6 months
‘Social media just got healthy’ – one year on

Keeping abreast of the news agenda is critical for any communications consultant, so many turn to online tools to make life easier. Until recently in healthcare, apart from the usual RSS feeds and blog monitoring options, online news aggregators such as Techmeme in the technology industry, simply didn’t exist. That was until twelve months ago, when Israel Lagares from Fat Man Unleashed launched Health Ranker - a social media news site that allows people to link to and rank health stories and information. It’s a US-based site, but it’s not limited to US content, which makes it great for keeping on top of those stories making waves on either – or both – sides of the pond.
The site allows users to tag stories by categories, such as Health News – Food & Nutrition – Disease & Conditions – Mental Health – Diet & Weight Loss making it easy to search and it also provides a useful chart of the top news, photos and videos of the day, month or year.
Rather than just posting a piece on how we thought the first year had gone, we decided to get in touch with Israel and ask him instead.
He told us, “Health Ranker is quickly coming up on its first year anniversary (February) and it has been an insightful year. Since launch, we’ve doubled our traffic month on month and built a solid user base. We still remain under the radar in the social media scene, but have been added to several ‘share’ and ‘mashup’ sites. Something that we are extremely proud of is the fact that we have managed to cultivate many great relationships with other health sites and networks. This has helped us many times over since it has branded us as a go-to health social news site. 2009 is going to be a big year for us as we launch our new design and unveil many, many partnerships.”
We agree that this could be a really big year for Health Ranker and look forward to seeing the new design and hearing about its new partnerships. Sites like this depend on the community, so we hope that people continue to spread the word – after all, the greater the number of people that regularly contribute stories and information, the greater the value of the site to its users in the longterm.
